All you need to know about choosing headphones for watching TV

Headphones for TV

I’ve tried quite a few different headphones for watching TV – Coby, RCA, Maxell, Sony, Koss, Shure – but I always end up coming back to Sennheiser. I don’t know, there’s something about the sound they produce – the bass has a real depth to it, and the high frequencies are always sharp without having that annoying tinny sound you often get with cheaper brands.

The latest headphones, which I use almost exclusively for watching movies on TV, are a pair of Sennheiser RS-120’s. Yep, these are wireless, but wireless headphones ain’t what they used to be, baby.

Long gone are the days when wireless meant a completely rubbish frequency response. These wireless Sennheiser 120s are better than most of the corded headphones for tv I’ve tried, and that includes some fairly expensive models.

If you’ve got a good home theater setup and you’re worried about losing out on sound quality when using headphones, these could be the answer.

Not only do they sound awesome, they’re also very well kitted out. They come with a selection of connectors, so you’ll be able to use them with whatever home theater equipment you have, even if it’s an older model TV. That’s perfect for me because have a huge old Panasonic TV which is years out of date but has such a good picture I’m loathe to get rid of it.

As for the wireless range… well, it reaches absolutely everywhere in my house without faltering, so what more can I say? I think the quoted spec is about 300 meters, but like when am I ever going to need that, Really? If I’m that far away from the TV I’ll probably have my running headphones on.

I don’t know what kind of batteries they use, apart from the fact they’re rechargeable, but they’ve never once needed to go back onto the charging unit while I’ve been using them. That includes a mammoth Lord of The Rings movie session which lasted for way too long. I tell you, my ears wore out before the batteries did…

Another great thing is that when you crank the volume up on these headphones, they’re not loud enough to be annoying to other people. Ok, so I wouldn’t wear them sitting next to someone who was trying to listen to something else, but if you’re sat up watching your favorite movie and the kids are in bed, you don’t need to worry at all about having them turned up.

The only thing I do wonder about, is how long they’ll last. Let’s just say they get more use than the average set of headphones, but as of this moment in time, they show no signs of fatigue at all. To be honest, they’ve been such a good buy that I’ll probably just buy another pair of these headphones for tv when they wear out. I haven’t found anything better for the price yet so these remain my recommended headphones for TV for the time being.

So where can you get hold of a pair of Sennheiser 120s? Well, I guess the easiest place is your local audio equipment store, but I have noticed a bargain or two online. It would be worth you checking out Amazon and eBay before you part with your hard earned cash. One thing I’ve had success with before, is getting a good price online and then going shopping and asking the store manager if they can match it. A surprising number of them will.

Anyway, I recommend you at least try them in the shop. Depending on what headphones for tv you’ve been using before, you’ll either be completely blown away, or at least moderately impressed.
